Residents Along the Montreal Are Always Nervous This Time of Year

IRONWOOD, MI - Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - Recent heavy snows; continued warm temperatures; strong winds and predicted rains have got residents living in the low-lying areas near the Montreal River worried.

Astute City workers kept close records of the 2002 flooding, and their records could prevent future damage to homes and other property.

These are the sequence of events as they happened back in 2002. Using the markings on the Silver/Aurora Street Trestle Bridge could mean the difference between disaster and inconvenience.

Bridge Mark 1 ½

Water was at this level for at least 1 week prior to flooding in 2002.

House at 420 East Cedar Street had snow pooling in the back yard due to snow melt.

Problems began showing up at 420 East Cedar prior to the river rising.

Bridge Mark 4 to 4 ½

420 East Cedar Street is starting to flood.

The house across from Pizza King Joe's is starting to experience overflow in the back yard.

Bridge Mark 5 to 5 ½

House across from Pizza King Joe's is fully flooded.

Cedar Street is starting to flood over.

Norrie Street is starting to flood over.

Bridge Mark 5 ½ to 6

Norrie Street is fully flooded over.

Water is over the Silver Street Bridge

Silver Street is flooded from the bridge to just before Hemlock Street.

Hemlock Street if flooded from Silver Street to Ayer Street.

Cedar Street is flooded from Hemlock Street to the Montreal River.

Bridge Mark 6 ½

Water is running over the Norrie Street Bridge.

Water is going around Bread Company building on US-51 in Hurley.

Water is one foot below the bridge on US-2.

Water is seven feet from the southwest corner of house at 415 North Hemlock.

Water is up Norrie Street up to catch basin at 410 Norrie Street.

Bridge Mark 7

117 1st Avenue in Hurley is surrounded by water.

415 North Hemlock would have taken in water if not for the sandbagging.

Water has crested and came within 6 inches of the main trestle bridge beams.

The forecast for the next five days is partly cloudy with temperatures during the day in the high 40's to the mid 50's.
