GCC Holds Monthly Board of Trustees Meeting
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI - Tuesday, December 16, 2008 - The Gogebic Community College Board of Trustees met in regular session last night and heard a report of the activities of the past two weekends with the snowmobile snow cross events held at Mt. Zion. Steve Pallin and Chris Whitburn, representing the community group that ran the national event this past weekend, Keith Johnson, from the group who ran the regional event the previous weekend, and Jim Vanderspoel, GCC’s Director of Ski Area Management, reported on the success of the both events that were held in Ironwood. Representatives from the International Series of Champions (ISOC) were very pleased with the events, the area, and with Mt. Zion. Pallin presented GCC President Jim Lorenson and Board Chairman Bob Jacquart with a tournament trophy thanking the college for its support. The college will continue to work with the groups to host similar events next season. According to Vanderspoel, one pleasant surprise of the weekend occurred for up to six Gogebic Community College students in the Ski Area Management Program. “Because the ISOC officials were so pleased with the quality of work done by our student staff on preparing and maintaining the hill for the events, up to six of our students have been invited to have an internship and work further with ISOC on the national race circuit in Shakopee, Minnesota and Hayward, Wisconsin later this year. It is a great testament to the quality of our students here at GCC.” In other business, Dean of Business Erik Guenard presented the financial report and stated that the college is fiscally stable as it moves into the second semester. President Jim Lorenson reported that the fall semester was completed last Friday and that the campus offices will be closed from December 24 through January 4. Mt. Zion opens for the season this Friday, December 19, and the Lindquist Student Center will be open for various hours which are posted on the college website. |
