DIDA Fails to Attract Quorum: Signs Discussed & Meeting Rescheduled

IRONWOOD, MI - Friday, February 22, 2008 - Thursday's Downtown Ironwood Development Authority (DIDA) meeting failed to produce a quorum, so the meeting had to be rescheduled. The rescheduled DIDA meeting will be held on Friday, February 29, 2008, at 12:00 PM CST, in the Community Development Office on the second floor of the Memorial Building.

DIDA members in attendance Thursday were New Chairman George Goerig, Vice-Chariman Joe Karius, Jackie Powers, and Elaine Erickson. Wayne Ozark, Don Hitt, and Mayor Bruce Noren had excused absences. Rachael Hubbard and Eva Smith-Furgason were unexcused.

Without a quorum of members, the Authority cannot take action on any matters. Chairman Goerig, used the canceled meeting as an opportunity to bring attending members up-to-date on the DIDA's Wayfinder Signage Program.

Wayfinder signs are signs that direct visitors to a community to government offices; schools; area attractions and points of interest. Because all of the signs are all similar in appearance, travelers can easily identify them and use them to navigate their way throughout a community.

According to Goerig, four signs will be initially ordered. The location of the signs and the points of interest listed on each are as follows: (1) Entering from Hurley at the McLeod/Aurora Street "Y" intersection [Downtown Business District, City Offices, Carnegie Library, Police/Fire Departments, Hiawatha, and the Depot Museum/Chamber of Commerce]; (2) at the Suffolk and Aurora Street intersection east bound [Downtown Business District, City Offices, Carnegie Library, Hiawatha, and the Depot Museum/Chamber of Commerce]; (3) at the Lake and Ayer Street south bound intersection [Downtown Business District, City Offices, Carnegie Library, Police/Fire Departments, Hiawatha, and the Depot Museum/Chamber of Commerce]; and (4) at the intersection of Norfolk and Ayer Street west bound [Downtown Business District, City Offices, Carnegie Library, Hiawatha, and the Depot Museum/Chamber of Commerce].

The map in the slideshow shows the locations of each sign proposed.

The signs will not be able to be installed until spring, due to frost concerns. Final decisions on these signs cannot be made until the Authority has a meeting of the majority of members. There are nine members in the DIDA. A quorum is AT LEAST five members.
