Today is the Last Day to Register for August Primary

LANSING, MI - Monday, July 07, 2008 -Michigan residents can visit any Michigan Department of Human Services county office across the state to beat the July 7 deadline for voter registration applications for the August 5 general primary election.

Individuals who are seeing caseworkers, conducting supervised visitations or visiting the offices for any reason can complete and submit voter registration materials. Individuals are not required to be receiving DHS services or assistance to complete voter registration applications.

"Casting a vote is a powerful way to be involved in decisions that have a direct impact on your life," DHS Director Ismael Ahmed said. "It is an important tool to root out poverty."

The 2008 study "Rooting Out Poverty" by the Community Action Agency Partnership recommends registering people to vote as a means to maximize participation in society, a critical component to end long-term poverty.

Citizens can also register online, at the City Clerk's office, or at any Secretary of State branch office.

According to Terri Lynn Land, Michigan's Secretary of State, "One of the fundamental rights of our democracy is the right to vote. Any U.S. citizen who is at least age 18 on election day is eligible.

But before you can cast a ballot, you must register. Voter registration forms are available at any Secretary of State branch office, online at www.Michigan.gov/sos or from your local clerk. This Web site outlines what you need to know about registering to vote and voting.

This election year, make sure your voice is heard -- register and vote!"
