Ironwood Walgreens Sets Opening Date

IRONWOOD, MI - Sunday, July 13, 2008 - IronwoodInfo.com reports that the Ironwood Walgreens store at 802 East Cloverland Drive, will open on Friday, July 25, 2008, at 8:00 AM. Store hours will be from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily.

According to a statement received by IronwoodInfo.com from Walgreens corporate spokeswoman, Carol Hively, "Typically we have a quiet opening and then a few weeks later, when the store is up and running, have grand opening specials at the store.

IronwoodInfo.com reporter Lou Bonagura reports, "In interviewing local residents it was interesting to observe that there are more people interested in having a Walgreens than a Wal-Mart. Perhaps that may be due to our aging population."

Perhaps the difference in attitude could also be due to the fact the Wal-Mart is getting Ironwood police and fire protection at a rate of merely $25,000/year. Had the City refused coverage to the world's largest retailer, they would have easily paid ten times that amount in additional insurance premiums. Could it be that Wal-Mart doesn't contribute a red cent to Ironwood's City tax-base? It could be due to the fact that our City Manager allowed Wal-Mart to dump thousands of dollars worth of construction debris on City land free of charge.

Walgreens didn't receive any of the perks similar to those the City of Ironwood foolishly handed Wal-Mart. Walgreens, through their property taxes, will be giving a financial "shot in the arm" to  our schools, our police and fire departments, our City streets and sidewalks, the College, the Carnegie Library, HOPE animal shelter, the Civic Center, and every other entity that relies on millage revenue.
