Beacon and GCSD Summoned to Auto Accident Near Wal-Mart
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Friday, March 14, 2008 - Beacon Ambulance and the Gogebic County Sheriff's Department were called to the scene of an accident at the intersection of Country Club Road (on the way towards Wal-Mart) and US-Highway 2 at approximately 2:30 PM. Chronicle photographer Steve Frank was able to capture these photographs at 2:55 PM CST returning from yesterday afternoon's E9-1-1 Committee Meeting. Several local citizens, including a group lead by Ironwood Attorney David McDonald, have been working to convince the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to place a traffic light at that intersection. MDOT refuses to place a light at that location until there is a need. Wal-Mart has offered to pay the lion's share of the costs, but MDOT will not approve the placement of the traffic light. This intersection has always been hazardous, but it is increasingly so, due to the large volume of traffic that Wal-Mart's opening has caused. Additional information has not yet been released by the GCSD at this time. Jim Albert |
