Chronicle Adds "Old Money" Exhibit to Website

IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, March 04, 2008 - The Superior Chronicle has added a new section, Old Money, that showcases currency from the past.

The bill pictured above is the largest denomination of currency ever printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). The $100,000 Series 1934 Gold Certificate featuring the portrait of President Woodrow Wilson, was printed from December 18, 1934 through January 9, 1935 and was issued by the Treasurer of the United States to Federal Reserve Banks only against an equal amount of gold bullion held by the Treasury Department. The notes were used only for official transactions between Federal Reserve Banks and were not circulated among the general public.

It is illegal to possess any bill larger than a $100 in the United States. This was very disappointing news to me. It was extremely difficult for me to throw all of my $500's, $1,000's, $5,000's, $10,000's, and $100,000's into the shredder -- but the law is the law!
