71 Year-Old Ewen Man Still Missing After Boating Mishap

BERGLAND, MI - Saturday, May 17, 2008 – After falling out of a boat on Lake Gogebic Thursday night, a 71 year-old Ewen man remains missing. According to police reports two elderly gentlemen, a 71 year-old from Ewen, and a 63 year-old from Bergland, went out fishing Thursday night. The Bergland man was the operator of the boat. The police believe the Ewen man fell overboard after he stood up and lost his balance. That forced the boat to rock and the Bergland man also fell over. According to Jackie Ory, a resident of the lake, she heard a noise as if they forgot to pull up the anchor and the boat just stopped. She said there she heard cries for help and she noticed the boat was spinning around in circles. Boaters pulled the Bergland man to safety, but were unable to find the Ewen man. Searches continued all day yesterday near the Bergland Bay Area by the Ontonagon County Sheriff's Department. The State Police dive team arrived later in the afternoon to assist in the search.
