Dredging Saxon Harbor Is No Easy Task

SAXON HARBOR, WI - Friday, October 10, 2008 - Roen Salvage Company of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin began dredging Saxon Harbor at 6:00 AM yesterday. They plan to complete the job in approximately one week.

The main part of the harbor will be dredged to nine feet below the low water mark. The massive barge derrick #3 is 190 feet long by 52 feet wide. The crane has a 120 foot boom. The big rectangular pillars on the barge are anchors of sorts. They  go to the bottom and hold the barge steady. The big tug is named "John R. Asher" and the little tug is named "Spuds."

The United States Army Corp of Engineers is the inspector for the job. Roen plans to remove 5000 yards of material from the harbor. Once the barge is loaded with materials it will move over to the west side of the harbor and unload behind the retaining wall.  Angelo Lupino Company will then use their front end loader to fill their trucks and haul the spills away.

Roen had a hard time entering the harbor on Wednesday. They had to dredge the entrance to the harbor to get in as it was only 5 feet deep. The buoy out in front of the harbor is a marker in 22 feet of water where the barge could have been safely anchored if they weren't able to get into the harbor.
