Allen Becomes First Ever Female Fire Captain in Ironwood
WAKEFIELD, MI - Friday, September 12, 2008 - On Wednesday evening, the Gogebic County Firefighters' Training Council held a free Chimney Fire Prevention Class. After the class was completed, Ironwood Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ken Jacobson announced that he appointed Barb Allen as the Department's newest Captain. "Barb Allen is a veteran firefighter. She's been the President of our Fire Department for three years. We had a resignation -- one of our firefighters moved out of town -- so I appointed Barb as our new Captain." Jacobson told the Chronicle, "She is the first female operational officer in a City of Ironwood fire department, of any kind, in 121 years." EDITOR'S NOTE: The Chronicle will feature a series of articles on the Chimney Fire Prevention Class in the days to come. |
