Ironwood Parks and Recreation Committee Seeks Ideas for Trail System Name
IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, September 30, 2008 – One of the main initiatives that the Parks and Recreation Committee (formerly the Recreation/Cultural/Life Enrichment Committee) has undertaken is the implementation of a non-motorized trail system through the City of Ironwood. Many of the routes of this potential system have been identified by Ironwood Citizens through the Gogebic County Comprehensive Land Use Plan that is being developed at the county level. With a portion of this trail network having already been implemented, the Parks and Recreation Committee of the City of Ironwood is seeking input from interested individuals regarding a name for the overall trail system. All submissions will be considered, but two guidelines offered by the Parks and Recreation Committee are that the name (1) be short and (2) creatively incorporate the natural beauty and/or rich history of the City of Ironwood. "This is an opportunity to leave your mark on what we are hoping becomes a significant component of the City of Ironwood's culture," said Dan Petersen, Community Development Director for the City of Ironwood. "It is a neat way to be a part of this community." As more and more people look for cheap forms of transportation and recreational opportunities in their own backyard, trails systems are becoming an increasingly valuable asset in communities across the nation. Trail systems have become an integral part of many communities by, among other things, linking residential neighborhoods, commercial shopping districts, and employment centers – they are also a great way to promote healthy lifestyles. If you have an idea for the trail system name that you would like to submit, please provide your idea along with your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address to petersend@cityofironwood.org, or to the following address: TRAIL NAME SUBMISSION c/o City of Ironwood, Community Development Office 213 S. Marquette St. Ironwood, MI 49938 Submissions will be accepted until Monday, October 6th at 4:00 PM. |
