Bud Johnson Nets Monster Lake Trout at Saxon Harbor

SAXON HARBOR, WI - Monday, August 03, 2009 - Captain Bud Johnson, fishing on his charter boat, the Cacchen, with Elvira Zalewski, Bob Obradovich, and Steve Wendell were practicing for the Saxon Harbor PowderPuff contest on May 28th, 2009 when he caught this monster 43-1/2 inch, 40 pound Mackinaw Lake Trout. The crew was fishing off the north side of the Gull Island Shoal refuge near Madeline Island in Lake Superior.

They were fishing in 150' of water with the fish being taken at 90' using downriggers trolling a watermelon colored Northern King spoon. Steve Wendell was on the rod, O.B. was on the net, while Captain Bud was on the helm.

The battle for this monster lasted approximately 1/2 hour. O.B. could not boat the huge fish without the help of Captain Bud. After the Cacchen entered Saxon Harbor, Henry Gilbertson looked at the fish and thought it was possibly the largest Lake Trout ever taken out of Saxon Harbor. Jim Aili of Range Taxidermy did a beautiful job of mounting this once in a lifetime trophy.
