41st Annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon Begins Friday

HURLEY, WI - Tuesday, August 04, 2009 - This Saturday, August 8 runners will gather at the starting line in Upson and Gile for the 41st Annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon. This years event will host both a full marathon and 1/2 marathon along with the popular 2 person and 5 person relay teams.

The event begins Friday night with the "carb loading" pasta feed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley from 4-7:00 PM. All proceeds will benefit the Hurley Soccer Team coached by Chris Tweeten.

At 7:00 PM stroll down to the Iron County ATV/Snowmobile trail head for entertainment featuring Dorothy and the Boys, Miles Mykannen and Marty's Goldenaires.

At approximately 8:15 PM, Donna Gering and the Easy Striders Running Club will bring the torch from Upson to be lit by Mayor Joe Pinardi. A special dedication will also be held. Saturday morning join runners, community volunteers and spectators as the race begins.

Hurley's infamous Silver Street will be blocked off from the Intersection of Highway 51 west to 5th Avenue. Beginning at 10:00 AM with live music from three local bands lasting until 8:00 PM, children's games to include a sidewalk chalk art contest and more, free prize raffles and cheering of the runners the day will have something for everyone.

At approximately 2:00 PM the awards will be given to the top runners. It promises to be a great day --- come down and join the fun.
