Get Moving U.P. Activity Based Wellness Challenge

IRONWOOD, MI - Wednesday, December 30, 2009 - Join the Wellness Council of the Upper Peninsula (WELCUP) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in the ninth annual GET MOVING U.P. Community Challenge, an activity based challenge designed to encourage participants to get 30 minutes of physical activity at least five times a week. And with people making New Year’s Resolutions . . . it's a perfect time to start getting active!

The eight week contest runs from Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 through Saturday, February 27th, 2010. All participants must visit the www.fitup.org website to register and access the program. Once participants reach the www.fitUP.org home page, users will be directed to click on the BCBS of Michigan link to officially register for the on-line tracking program and begin logging their minutes or miles of activity.

Any participant who meets the minimum activity goal (150 minutes/week), will be eligible to win fleece pullovers and/or cash prizes! WELCUP will award prizes to 12 winners each week (2 winners from each of the 6 regions in the U.P.). Six winners will each receive $10 cash incentives and the other 6 winners will receive fleece pullovers. In addition, we’ll have 6 regional $20 winners, one individual who will win a fleece pullover and one $150 winner at mid-point. And finally, we will end the program with 6 regional $50 winners, one individual who will win a fleece pullover along with a final grand prize winner who will receive $300!

Individual Goals to be achieved:
Weekly Goal: 150 minutes
Mid-Point (4 Weeks) Goal: 600 minutes
Final Goal: 1,200 minutes

In addition because this is a “Community Challenge,” every region will have a chance to win a shared community prize such as a new park bench for a local park, a bike rack for a local city, enhanced biking/walking paths, signage, etc. BCBSM will be offering $5,000 to purchase such community items. If all 6 regions meet the minimum amount of activity required, all 6 regions win! The $5,000 will be divided up accordingly or $833 to go to each region!

** Registration will open December 10, 2009 and will continue until the start of the program.
