Clean-up Has Begun Following Downtown Apartment Fire

IRONWOOD, MI - Saturday, December 26, 2009 - Clean-up following the early evening apartment fire on Monday at the Pickard Place Apartments has begun. Service Master of Ashland and N.E.W. Restoration Services have removed the smoke, fire and water damaged property out of Apartment A of the Lowell Street building; the window's been temporarily boarded up; and an air cleaner has been installed to eliminate smoke.

The fire and the bulk of the damage was isolated to one apartment due to the prompt response of area firefighters -- both the IPSD and the Ironwood Volunteer Fire Department. The building's construction was also instrumental in containing the damage. Interior and exterior walls are solid concrete. The floors are also poured concrete and terrazzo.

According to reports the fire originated from an electric stove and an unattended cooking incident. Fire, smoke and water damaged the wooden kitchen cabinets, floor coverings, and window treatments.
