Polar Bear Midgets Win 3 of 4 This Weekend

IRONWOOD, MI - Monday, February 2, 2009 - The Polar Bear Midget Hockey team played a full slate of four games on the road this weekend, On Saturday, they appeared Finlandia University 's rink in Hancock where they defeated the Copper Country's Michigan State Police sponsored team in two games. In Game 1, both Kyle Anderson and Stuart Stephens scored and assists went to Lou Hendges, Jacob Breitenfeldt, and Nathan Makinen. Goalie Derek Chavers recorded a shut out in the 2-0 victory. Although Copper Country notched one goal, the Polar Bears were victorious on a 2-1 win with Cody Cunico in the net. Goals were credited to Tony Giackino and Stuart Stephens; assists went to Dallas Saubert, Ian Findlay and Nathan Makinen.

On Sunday, the Polar Bears appeared in two games at Marquette 's Lakeview Arena to facedown Marquette 's speedy and skilled Kurian Construction team. In two previous meetings, the Polar Bears were unable to do much damage, losing both matches. The first game was a disappointing 8-1 loss with the single goal credited to Kyle Anderson on a feed from Stuart Stephens. Game 2 was an exciting affair: The Polar Bears jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the game when Tony Giackino launched a shot at the net and teammate Cody Kurta drove in the rebound for a goal. Fighting through ten minutes of penalty time, Polar Bear Goalie Derek Chavers held up under the pressure and the Polar Bears pulled out the victory.

The Polar Bear Midget team plays L'Anse High School on Thursday, February 5 in L'Anse. Saturday, February 7 features Munising at the Pat O'Donnell Civic Center at 11:30 and 2:30. Sunday, the boys are back on the road to Ontonagon for two games.

With the District 8 State-qualifying tournament slated for Feb 20-22 in Negaunee, the Polar Bear Midgets are busy fine-tuning their game. For exciting high school age hockey action, come out and support these hard working athletes!

The Ironwood Plastics sponsored Team is coached by Jeff Wasley, Rick Cunico, and Brandon Hudson. The players are aged 15-19 and hail from Saxon, Montreal , Hurley, Ironwood, Bessemer and Wakefield.
