Huge Bear Struck By Auto On Wisconsin Highway
ON THE NET - MERRILL, WI - Thursday, January 08, 2009 - According to a report submitted to the Chronicle via email, this massive black bear was struck by a vehicle on Highway 64 between Merrill, Wisconsin and Medford, Wisconsin. Estimated at over 750 pounds this huge animal takes up most of an eight foot flatbed pickup. Our readers quickly pointed out conflicts with the pictures that proved this story to be a hoax. READER'S COMMENT - Friday, January 09, 2009 - 6:02 AM - If this bear was hit by a vehicle in Merrill on January 8, why is there no snow on the ground and why do the trees in the background still have leaves on them? Looks like a hoax to me. Mike Randall READER'S COMMENT - Friday, January 09, 2009 - 8:20 AM - Huge Bear Struck on Wisconsin Highway. Besides the previous comment about leaves being on the trees and no snow January 8, 2009: It's a Griszzly Bear! (Ursus Horribilus) Not one known to exist in the wild in Wisconsin (they were all eaten by Wolves reintroduced by the DNR). Nice bit of journalism in Ironwood! Note: Do NOT believe every email you receive! Jack Assterholden, jack_assterholden@yahoo.com EDITOR'S COMMENT - Friday, January 09, 2009 - 10:02 AM - Jack, After examining the photos and reading the Reader's Comments posted to date, it is quite obvious that our bear story is as phony as your name. I never claimed or pretended to be a "journalist," and I am not afraid to admit to a mistake when one is made. I made a mistake. You have to admit, however, that the bear in the photos is an impressive animal. Thanks for the input. Jim Albert |
