SnoCross Racer Meets with Prosthetic Specialist

PILLAGER, MN - Saturday, January 03, 2009 - On December 13, ISOC SnoCross Racer, Mike Shultz received a devestating injury to his lower left leg while racing at this season's 2nd National race in Ironwood. He was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth where he underwent several hours of surgery.

Since the Chronicle learned of the accident, we have been reporting his progress. Our reports have been based on information posted on Mike's Caring Bridge.com journal. This is the most recent post to his journal, made on New Year's Day.

Hi, it's Mike here. Happy New Year to everyone. Well, we have been out and about the last few days meeting with a few different doctors and also with the prosthetic specialist. We talked about a plan to get fitted for my new leg and it sounds like we'll have to wait around a month or so until my stump shrinks a bit and then we can start the fitting and molding process. We also talked about a few different types of legs and joint systems and there is a lot of different options out there. One question I asked was, "Is it possible to make my foot able to move a shift lever on a bike?" The answer was not real promising so we'll have to figure something else out to take care of that issue. Everything else sounded real good and I will be able to do most of the things I have been doing so I'm looking forward to getting started with my new leg.

We also set up an account for donations at US BANK under Mike Schultz Benefit for those who would like to help us out with my new leg funding. We are so grateful for all the help and support from everyone.

Thank you from Mike and Sara

Evidently, previous posts to the Mike's  journal were not clear to some of our readers as to whether or not Mike's leg was amputated. This post shows that he did, in fact, lose his leg in the accident. The Chronicle apologizes for any misunderstanding.
