Mechanical Failure Blacks Out City for 4th

IRONWOOD, MI - Sunday, July 05, 2009 - Mechanical failure lead to a City-wide electrical black-out yesterday morning beginning at about 7:30 AM. Power was restored to most of the City before 9:00 AM. Ironwood Public Safety officers were directing traffic at all three of the major intersections along Cloverland Drive. Temporary stop signs were placed at the Suffolk/Aurora Street intersection in the Downtown. A reliable source told the Chronicle that Xcel Energy recently upgraded most the substation on Alfred Wright Boulevard, however to cut costs they didn't change over two of the units. Both of the older units failed resulting in the black-out.
