Honoring our Mining Heritage with Murals!

IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, July 21, 2009 - Ironwood has a great opportunity to enhance the present by highlighting our history. The history of mining, and the ancestors who built this town out of nothing but wilderness through their hard and sometimes fatal work.

The history is well documented and lies just below the surface, ready to be uncovered and revered by those who wish to see it. I am speaking of the Miners Memorial Trail and the Miners Mural Project. I believe they compliment each other.

The trail is a worthwhile project and will bring a quality form of recreation and business to our city. Visitors will be able to see the beauty of the area by walking in the paths of the past.

The mural will face the mines on the hill and serve as a beacon to visitors of the history that lies within our city limits. Located on the corner of South Suffolk Street and McCleod Street, it will be seen by the many travelers frequenting businesses like the Memorial Building, The Globe, Charter Communications, Tacconelli’s restaurant, etc., as well as those people coming down the hill from Hiawatha.

This summer should see a lot of good changes to our town by way of suggestions from the Visions program and with help from people like you, people who really care about our town. So, won’t you please, consider volunteering for either or both committees? It will not take much of your time. You will be working with the nicest people, and you will feel such a since of accomplishment.
