"Friends" Tour "Caves" Area
IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, June 02, 2009 - Yesterday evening several of the Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park (FMMHP) took a hike through the controversial "caves" area. Chronicle photographer Steve Frank submitted these photos that show the natural beauty of the area. This former mining site has truly been reclaimed by nature. How many cities can you think of that have such beautiful, natural greenspace? Since there's been so much discussion over this property, the Chronicle feels it is appropriate to show everybody what everybody is fighting over. Many of these photos resemble valued vacation spots that tourists travel miles to visit. The ponds, the cliffs, and the trees create breathtaking views. This is land the City of Ironwood should truly cherish for what it is. The group of hikers started out at about 6:00 PM from the corner of Ayer and Bonnie Streets and finished their hike at about 8:00 PM by the Skate Park. According to Frank 90% of the area the Friends hiked was not along ATV trails.
