IPSD Seeks Donations for Upcoming Bicycle Safety Program
IRONWOOD, MI - Sunday, May 31, 2009 - On June 20, 2009, the Ironwood Public Safety Department will be hosting its annual Bicycle Safety Program. IPSD Officer Matthew J. Sterbenz, director of the program, sent out the following appeal seeking support. Once again this year, we are asking for your support with our Bicycle Safety Program. This program helps to ensure the safety of our area youth by educating them on bicycle safety procedures and bicycle laws. This program also registers bicycles, gives away safety equipment, gives away new and restored bicycles, has snacks, and gives tours of Ironwood Public Safety Equipment. In addition, this year we are going to try some new activities such an obstacle course. The program will be held on Saturday, June 20th 2009, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Ironwood Public Safety Department building. The Bicycle Safety Program is completely supported by the community and volunteers. Public safety officers volunteer their time to educate the youth, and register bicycles. American Legion volunteers provide food and snacks to all participants, along with assisting with activities. Hobby Wheel provides free bicycle tune-ups. We are asking for any type of donations to the program, however, monetary donations are preferred. The money is used to purchase new bicycles, bicycle helmets, safety brochures along with a gift bag items. We do understand that times are tough for everyone now, but if we continue to come together hopefully we can make sure that programs and events like this are here for our community. This program has seen steady growth since its inception and with your support we can ensure its continued success.
We would also like to add another special thanks to those who help keep this program going. Last year we gave away 28 new bikes that were donated or bought with monetary donations. We also gave away free helmets, coloring books and other literature to every child who participated with the program, which we will do this year also.
