Talkin' Trash
IRONWOOD, MI - Saturday, May 2, 2009 - JB Disposal of Butternut, Wisconsin took over solid waste collection throughout the City of Ironwood yesterday. On April 2, 2009, the City Commission accepted JB's bid to collect the City residential solid waste. Waste Management out of Ashland has been doing the service for years, however, JB provided a lower bid and didn't include a possible fuel surcharge. The per customer bids from the three companies were: JB Disposal - $11.75/month; Waste Management $13.11/month; and Veolia - $15.44/month. City residents were paying $12.60/month through Waste Management. Back in April a few eyebrows were raised when it was pointed out that the City charges a 5% "administrative" fee to each customer's garbage account. Considering the garbage charges are attached to water customers' bills, many feel it is unfair and usurious for the City to be adding an administrative charge. |
