Fall Quiz Bowl Held at GCC

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI - Tuesday, November 3, 2009 - The Tenth Annual Fall Quiz Bowl Classic was held on the campus of Gogebic Community College recently. Teams from area high schools competed in both varsity and junior varsity competition.

Varsity teams from Ironwood and Hurley won the morning rounds of competition and went head-to-head for the overall championship. Ironwood emerged victorious by a score of 315 to 205. Bessemer defeated Wakefield-Marenisco by 225-175 in the runner-up competition.

In the junior varsity finals, Bessemer I defeated Bessemer II by the score of 125 to 65 for first place. Hurley defeated Ironwood I by 160 to140 in the runner-up competition. Eight teams participated in the junior varsity bracket.

“We had a great day of competition on campus,” said Quiz Bowl co-organizer Carl Vaara. “Many of the matches were very close and exciting. It is a wonderful opportunity for our area students to participate in good academic competition. All of the participants and their coaches should be congratulated.”
