Tuesdays at the Ironwood Theatre Are Special
IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - The Ironwood Theatre announces two events taking place in conjunction with the showing of Habitats North - Artists at Home with Birds, the inaugural art exhibition in the new Theatre Artspace. On Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 PM, wildlife biologist Jeff Wilson and artist/naturalist Terry Daulton will lead a gallery walk through the Habitats North exhibit. They will talk about five unique habitats in the Northwoods region, the birds that inhabit them, and their influence on the artists with work in the exhibit. Well qualified to speak on the environment, Jeff Wilson retired after 30 years of work in the region for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. During that time he has done intensive studies of the habits and habitats of the black bear, common loon, pine marten, ospreys and eagles, and other creatures of the Northwoods. Wilson has continued his interest in the study of wildlife in retirement. Among other adventures, he twice joined birders in Florida in search of the rare ivory-billed woodpecker. Terry Daulton is one of five visual artists participating in the Habitats North exhibit. A field biologist as well as a painter of pastels, Terry has traveled the around the world with Jeff Wilson, her partner. Her first major art exhibit documented that lengthy journey. Among her accomplishments is the development of Paradise Lost, an exhibition that brought together scientists and artists to present their ideas on climate change in the Northwoods. The exhibit was viewed by thousands in a four year tour in major venues throughout the Great Lakes region. On Tuesday, November 24, at 7:00 PM, poet/naturalist John Bates and weaver/poet Mary Burns will read from their nature-inspired writings. John Bates and his wife Mary live on the Manitowish River in northern Wisconsin. They share a large work space where John writes while Mary works from one of a number of looms creating her award-winning fine art wall hangings and rugs. Together they have published over half a dozen books, primarily studies of the northern environment. Accomplished as poets, they rarely do readings of their own work. During these sessions, and on the evening of their Ironwood Theatre appearance, members of the audience are invited to share their own works or bring a favorite nature writing to read. Both Tuesday events are free and open to the public as is the Habitats North exhibit. Regular viewing times for the exhibit are from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, Mondays through Fridays, and from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays through November 28th. Admission is free.. Information on all the events is available by contacting the Ironwood Theatre at 109 East Aurora Street in Ironwood, Michigan or phoning the Theatre office at (906) 932-0618. |
