GCC to Host Millage Meetings IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI - Tuesday, October 05, 2009 - Representatives of Gogebic Community College will host a series of public forums to discuss the millage renewal question the college has on the November 3rd general election ballot. Sessions will be held at:
The sessions are open to the public. While the purpose of the forums is to provide the public with information regarding the millage renewal question, college president James Lorenson said, “These sessions will also provide us with an opportunity to hear any comments from the public regarding the college’s programs and service. This feedback is important to us, and helps us better serve our constituents.” Gogebic is seeking renewal of its 1.5 renewable mill levy. This millage was established by Gogebic County residents in 1971, subject to a 20 year renewal period. It was renewed in 1990 and will be considered by the voters again this fall. The funds from this millage are restricted to debt retirement, building and grounds maintenance and repair, and the purchase of instructional and non-instructional equipment. Examples of expenditures made with the use of these funds include payment of the construction cost of the Lindquist Student Center, swimming pool major maintenance and repairs, resurfacing of the Lindquist Center walking track, underwriting energy conservation projects including the installation of solar panels on campus facilities to reduce costs, purchase of computers for student use, and updating the science laboratories. For further information regarding the forums or millage renewal question can be directed to Lorenson’s office at (906) 932-4231, extension 200, or by contacting him at jiml@gogebic.edu. |
