Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park Honor the Pabst Mine Disaster

IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park will have the final hike this Thursday, September 24th, at 5:30 PM. This is the 83rd anniversary of the Pabst Mine Disaster. On September 24th, 1926, the Pabst Mine collapsed containing 46 iron ore miners. Three miners were killed, while 43 survivors were left trapped for 129 hours. The rescue of the trapped miners on the 5th day is considered to be one to the greatest mine rescues of all time.

We will meet at the Aurora Club at 5:30 PM. A guided tour through the “Caves” area will include a preview of the SISU Ski Trail. The SISU Ski Race will be on January 10, 2010, finishing in downtown Ironwood. At 7:00 PM. we will gather at the Pabst Mine Site for a candle light vigil to honor the men who lost their lives in the tragic disaster. We invite anyone who was touched by this or any other mining disaster to join us

All hikes and guided tours will be suspended until after the Deer Management Hunt. Look for our snowshoe trail hikes this winter.
