Friends of the MMHP to Honor the Pabst Disaster Miners Tonight
IRONWOOD, MI - Thursday, September 24, 2009 - The Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park will be hosting a hike tonight (Thursday, September 24th) in remembrance of the 83rd anniversary of the Pabst Mine Disaster of Ironwood. The approximately 2 hour hike (covering approximately 1.5-2 miles) will preview portions of the SISU Ski Race Trail, walk through portions of the East & North Norrie, Aurora and Pabst mine areas. Hikers should meet at the Aurora Club on Penokee Road near Frenchtown Road by 5:30 PM. A candlelight vigil honoring those "who died in the darkness, so future generations could live in the light" will be held at approximately 7:00 PM at the Pabst H shaft site (near the bend of Bonnie Road, just south of Ayer Street) Wear comfortable hiking shoes. Water bottles and small flashlight are recommended. |
