Marenisco Dump Site Clean-Up Planned for September 26th

IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, September 15, 2009 – The Ottawa National Forest is hosting a National Public Lands Day event near Marenisco, Michigan, on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Volunteers will clean up a half-acre dump site on National Forest land.

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2008, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, and planted over 1.6 million trees.

Volunteers will collect tires, scrap metal, and garbage and sort them into separate trailers for recycling or disposal. The site is a small opening within hardwood forest near Highway M-64. Anyone participating is requested to bring boots, water and wear appropriate clothing. The Forest will supply gloves and tools, and all volunteers will receive a National Public Lands Day T-shirt. Be sure to stick around afterwards for a picnic lunch (drinks, brats and hot dogs will be provided).

The event is schedule to begin at 8:00 AM (CST). The site is on the east side of Highway M-64, approximately four miles south of Marenisco and fire miles north of the Wisconsin state line. There will be signs posted. Parking will be along the highway. For more information, please contact Ian Shackleford at (906) 932-1330, ext. 331. We hope you can join us!
