FMMHP Seek Donations for the 2010 Miners' Scholarship Fund

IRONWOOD, MI - by Lily Palmer - Friday, April 30, 2010 - For a second year, the Friends of the MMHP are hoping to give the Miners’ scholarship to a deserving Luther L. Wright High School student that has a family history related to the mining industry. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Friends of the MMHP to continue to support both education and our mining heritage. Last year our members donated funds for a $500 scholarship in less than two weeks!

At this time, Friends of the MMHP is collecting donations for the Miners’ scholarship which is to be awarded on May 23rd. Please help show support for our community, our mining heritage and our commitment towards commemorating the Caves area by considering a contribution to the Miners’ scholarship. Checks can be dropped off at Coleman Engineering’s office at 200 East Ayer Street in Ironwood (same building as the Medicine Shoppe) between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM through Thursday, May 20th, 2010, at which time the cumulative scholarship funds will be delivered to the High School. Please make checks payable to: Ironwood Area Schools and put Miners’ Scholarship in the memo line.

As of the time of this post we have $60 in pledges. We look forward to your participation!

FYI: An update letter was submitted to the Ironwood City Commission last week regarding the FMMHP planning group’s plan to submit a revised MMHP plan in the near future. We are hoping to present a new plan to the City Commission sometime in June. The meeting date will be shared with the Friends at the time it is scheduled.

The Miners’ Scholarship was established in 2002 and picked up by the FMMHP in 2009 when it was in danger of discontinuation.
