Michigan Education Association Recommends Mike Lahti for State Senate

MEA says Lahti will fight for U.P. schools, students and parents

HANCOCK, MI - Thursday, August 12, 2010 - The Michigan Education Association (MEA) today recommended Mike Lahti for the 38th District state Senate seat representing the western Upper Peninsula.

“Mike Lahti has stood up for students throughout his service as a state representative. He’ll keep fighting as a state senator to support our schools and give our students the best education possible to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Phil Lynch, Escanaba Education Association.

“I am proud to receive the support of local teachers and school employees, and I’m grateful for the service they provide to our students,” Lahti said. “I look forward to continuing to work with local educators to give our students the education they need to qualify for good-paying jobs that will keep them here in the Upper Peninsula to work and raise their families.”

Lahti has a long history of public service and commitment to education, which began in 1994 when he was elected to the Hancock School Board. Lahti went on to serve for seven years and helped the community deal with difficult issues like school consolidation. He also serves as vice chairman of the Finlandia University Board of Trustees.

Lahti has been a small business owner and job creator for more than 40 years and continues to invest in the community. He still owns and operates the small insurance agency that he started in 1968. Lahti is a lifelong resident of Hancock and currently serves in the Michigan House of Representatives.
