Dave Luoma, Manager of Super One Ironwood presents a check to Betsy Slabaugh (right) of the Friends of the Murals Committee for the Miners Hat promotion and a $25.00 bonus to cashier, Barbara Myers (left) for selling the most Hats. HURLEY, WI - Saturday, August 21, 2010 - The Friends of the Murals Project not only raised money, but awareness of the project to Honor our Mining Heritage, by having a Miners' Hat donation. At the Hurley Super One, people can donate $1 to purchase a hat when they check out their groceries. The procedes will help to fund the first mural project in the City of Ironwood. The plan is to place the mural on the former City News/News Stand building on McLeod Avenue. The mural will be painted by the same artists that painted the murals in Ashland. The first mural will be a mining theme to honor the area's mining heritage. For a limited time, you can still buy a Hat for a $1 donation at the Hurley Super One. Thank you Super One Foods. The mural will face the mines on the hill and serve as a beacon to visitors of the history that lies within Ironwood's city limits. Located on the corner of South Suffolk Street and McCleod Street, it will be seen by the many travelers frequenting businesses like the Memorial Building, The Globe, Charter Communications, Tacconelli’s restaurant, etc., as well as those people coming down the hill from Hiawatha. According to the Friends of the Murals Facebook wall, "We are also selling 'Bricks' to finance this project. They're actually painted plaques with a name or 'In honor of" painted on a brick colored back ground,9"x12" for $50.00, 9"x24" for $100.00, or 18"x24" for $200.00. We are also offering a place in the Mural itself as a the Miners. $200.00 for a front row or $100.00 for ...a back row (Candidates must have worked in the mines.) Please consider Honoring a Miner in this way." The hope is that Ironwood will eventually have murals on a number of structures throughout the City. The Miners mural will be the first. Several communities have adopted plans to place murals on blank walls. These murals have become a tourist attraction elsewhere.
