Area Firefighters Quick to Respond to SUV Fire

IRONWOOD, MI - Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - Area firefighters responded immediately to an automobile fire in the K-Mart parking lot in the Ironwood Commons Plaza on Cloverland Drive. At approximately 5:30 PM, Ironwood Public Safety Department and Ironwood Volunteer Firefighters responded to a 911 call through Negaunee Dispatch stating that the small blue SUV was ablaze.

When the Chronicle arrived on the scene, the entire front end of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Firefighters immediately put out the flames, but smoke continued to billow from under the vehicle's hood. Firefighters forced the hood open and flooded the engine compartment with water to completely extinguish the fire. A relatively large crowd gathered to watch the action. It appears that no injuries occurred as a result of the fire.

The incident is under investigation, however, it appears that the cause of the fire might have been electrical in nature.
