WUPCWPMA Offers Free Presentation on Lakeshore Landscaping

WATERSMEET, MI - Monday, June 14, 2010 - The Western Upper Peninsula Cooperative Weed and Pest Management Area (WUPCWPMA) invites the public to our spring meeting on Monday, June 21. Guest speaker MaryJo Gingras, County Conservationist for the Iron County (WI) Land & Water Conservation Department, will give a free presentation on lakeshore landscaping. Good lakeshore landscaping protects water quality, prevents excessive aquatic plant growth and algal blooms, and supports local wildlife.

The meeting will be held Monday, June 21, 9:00 AM central time, at the Ottawa National Forest Visitor Center in Watersmeet, Michigan (corner of US 2 and US 45).

After the meeting, the WUPCWPMA will have our spring meeting, and the public is invited to stay if they are interested. Topics on our agenda include:

What are our members are doing this year to prevent or control aquatic invasive species.

Status of all known Eurasian watermilfoil and curlyleaf pondweed infestations within our CWMA. The WUPCWPMA received over $69,000 for invasive species work in 2010, mostly from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

We will review the different projects funded by the GLRI. Demonstration of new GLRI boat washer.
