Wakefield Michigan State Police Hold Food Drive

WAKEFIELD, MI - Monday, October 18, 2010 - The Michigan State Police Wakefield Post 87,100 Sunday Lake Street, Wakefield, Michigan 49968, will be accepting food donations from October 18th through November 1st as part of the Michigan Harvest Gathering. Donations received will be distributed to the local food pantry of Gogebic County.

2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the Michigan Harvest Gathering, the Food Bank Council of Michigan's annual campaign to raise food and funds to support Michigan's food banks and feed hungry families. In Michigan, 12% of households are struggling to put food on the table and nearly 1 in 6 children is at risk of hunger. Meeting the goal for 2010 will help provide 4.2 million meals for hungry families and children in Michigan.

The statewide goal for the program is to gather 300,000 pounds of found and to raise $800,000.

According to Jane Marshall, Food Bank Council of Michigan executive director, “We’ve seen an increase in the need of food, so many people are unemployed, and some are coming to a food bank for the first time ever.” Gogebic County has a greater need than ever considering the recent downturn in the economy.

One in 10 Michigan residents will use a food bank this year, many of them for the first time, according to the Council.
