Polar Bear Squirts Claim Upper Peninsula Championship

MARQUETTE, MI - Sunday, February 20, 2011 - The Polar Bear Squirts defeated Marquette in the UP championship game 6-1 this past Sunday. The Polar Bears went 5-0 defeating Marquette 8-2, Friday; Negaunee 7-5, Iron River 3-2, on Saturday; defeated Houghton 7-0 in the semifinals, then beating Marquette 6-1 to claim the U.P. Championship.

Scoring goals for the Polar Bears was Caleb Baxter (11), Tyler Morrison (9), Ethan Roehm (5), Nathan Garnell (3), Sydnee Lorenson ( 2), C. J. Sorensen with 1 goal. Assists were tallied by Roehm (8), Morrison (6), Baxter (5), Garnell, Sorensen, Tommy Lundin, and Brett Heil each with 2 assists, Hanna Koivisto, David Collins and Lorenson each with 1 assist. Matthew Clemens won all 5 games in net for the Polar Bears with 1 shutout.

"I was really proud of the players this weekend their hustle and their heart showed this weekend. The team had short-handed goals and one power play goal this weekend." said coach Scott Kellett.

The Polar Bears will be headed for Cadillac, Michigan for the state finals March 18-20.
