MERCER, WI - Monday, January 31, 2011 - On Wednesday, January 26th the Mercer First Graders participated in a program called Antlers, Skulls, and Skins given by Licia Johnson, naturalist from the Discovery Center. Ms. Johnson taught the children how to identify animals by looking for field marks on their fur, the difference between antlers and horns, and adaptations that animals have to survive the winter.
After the program the children enjoyed a snowshoe hike in the Carol Hanneman School Forest. They identified the tracks and scat of a snowshoe hare, followed a deer trail, and trudged through the deep snow in the forest bog.
