Greetings Friends of Miners Memorial Heritage Park!
IRONWOOD, MI - Friday, March 18, 2011 - This winter we have made wonderful progress on creating a marked ski trail and by having a snowshoe event in Miners Memorial Heritage Park! We have also been having regular snowshoe tours in the park on Sundays at 2:00 pm starting at the school bus garage on Ayer Street. Spring is coming quickly! We are planning on making the Miners Memorial Heritage Park more usable for people on a daily basis during the summer months too! Even though we do not have grant money at this time, we do have a lot of enthusiasm and momentum to work on the park plan and put in place what we can with the dedication and efforts of our volunteers as well as the guidance of the City of Ironwood. Parks and Recreation Committee Survey At the last Parks and Recreation Committee meeting, Merritt Bussiere, the Community Development Director of Ironwood, shared draft results from of a survey that was given to a random sample of Ironwood residents. The survey asked a series of questions regarding people's interests and opinions of the recreational resources in Ironwood. The results were very encouraging for MMHP. The results suggest that the majority of people in Ironwood support the basic components that our group would like to create within the Miners Memorial Heritage Park. Sixty-five percent of respondents indicated that "signs describing local history" are extremely important, very important, or important. In addition, 65 percent indicated that "Additional walking/Hiking Trails" are extremely important, very important, or important. Over half of respondents indicated that "additional bike/mountain bike trails" are extremely important, very important, or important. Many other interesting and encouraging results are within this document. Everyone is Invited to the March Meeting! The Friends of MMHP will meet Tuesday, March 22nd, at 7:00 pm at Manny's Restaurant. We will summarize the work of the Leadership Team, discuss the Miners Scholarship, and start planning for the Spring Cleanup in the Miners Memorial Heritage Park. Thank you for your support!
